Artist Statement

In this drawing, I want to depict the pure happiness and satisfaction of interacting with nature. After moving from New York City to New Jersey, finally, I have a backyard full of trees and flowers. I love walking with my dog in the wildness. There are mushrooms, grasses, plants, rabbit holes, and earthworms...I often wander there, surprised by new creatures I occasionally discover. After a shower of rain, the aroma is divine. The peace, the pure pleasure, it's a precious gift from nature. It also gives the courage to my protagonist in the latest illustration series. She gets the power from the earth to pursue her freedom.

I love the dreamy atmosphere of the imaginary world. People live in their dreams, so does my little character. Her dream is to go out of this world to explore. On the road, she encountered amazing street artists, playing music and living differently from other people. They gave her new perspectives and encouragements. They are one of the many who inspired her on her journey.

Artist Statement

I love the feeling of sinking my feet into soft and warm sand, as if connecting deep into the fur of the earth. The sound of waves is nearby, like a symphony. Lying down on the sand, playing with friends, I can't imagine better moment than that. In this drawing, I want to express the happiness of pure friendship between the girl and the sea turtle Tutu. The courage to take risks to help and support a friend is a beautiful thing.

I was fascinated by the sunset at the Jersey shore. The calm sound of the sea waves, the salty smell of the sea water, the sticky sand of the seashore…One summer I took my dog there to see the sunset. It was a magical moment. I lost my sense of time. I set my character to meet her best friend in this environment. It reflects my deep emotions.

I want to depict the joy of the dancing sea turtle named Tutu. He is like a magician, playing with all the colorful elements from the sea, communicating his happiness to the world. I adore the pure spirit of animals.

I grew up in a historic city in China. There has been a profound culture of appreciating stones for thousands of years. Lake stone (太湖石), rain flower stone (雨花石), cobblestone (鹅卵石)...I played with many of them, and they gave me happiness and inspiration. Sea turtle has a solid shell. It reminds me of the stone games I played in childhood. Every piece is precious, and I pay them with respect. I would love to inject a little humor here. Among Tutu and stones, can you always tell the differences? Sometimes the stone is Tutu; sometimes Tutu is the stone. Tutu likes to invite my little character to play hide and seek among stones. Why not?

Artist Statement

It is an imaginary city. People live their everyday life on hands. They walk on hands, dance on hands, and parade on hands, except a few people, who can stand on their feet. I am fascinated by this world in my mind. I want to show it to readers and friends. It’s full of magic and color. Why do people live on hands? How do they live on their hands? Is there world upside down? Life is full of mysterious stories.

This is the first drawing I did for the new illustration series. The scene and the emotions intertwined in my dream: blue water surrounding me, sea creatures trying to be closer to me, waves rolling in the deep motion and pushing me forward...I had this sensual and emotional feeling of wanting to be embraced by the creatures, but I could not move in the dream. The freedom was constrained, while the wish was strong. It made me cry out of the dream. I don't want to forget it. So I decided to draw it out.
